Jokkmokk is known for its winter market for the Sami people, since 1605. Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum invites you to learn more about the Sami culture. Within the rural district of Jokkmokk, you find four National parks: Sarek, Stora Sjofallet, Muddus and Padjelanta. They are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as “Laponia”, the last wilderness in Europe. The “big four” of Swedish fauna – lynx, wolverine, bear and wolf – are found here, as well as reindeer and elks. Around half of Sweden’s 400 species of birds have been sighted in Lapland. The 430 km long hiking trail, Kungsleden (the King’s tail), crosses this area.
