Östersund is located in the middle of Sweden, at the shores of Sweden’s fifth largest lake, Storsjön. It’s the only city in the county Jamtland and the region’s cultural and economical centre. The city has the Mid Sweden University’s largest campus site. Östersund has also hosted several World Championships in various sports such as biathlonspeed skating and ski orienteering along with Swedish National Championships in cross country skiing and snocross. The prize winning museum Jamtli shows a number of historical buildings from all over the county. The world’s most northerly rune stone from the Viking age is located on the island Froson. Froso Zoo is one of Sweden’s largest zoological gardens with exotic animals. Outside of Östersund in the village of Orrviken there’s a Moose Zoo. The city festival “Storsjoyran” (The Great Lake Giddy Festival), is held the last weekend of July.
