North Zealand
Drive north along the waterfront and enjoy the beautiful view of the Oresund straight. On the other side you see a glimpse of Sweden. In Humlebaek is the famous museum of modern art, Louisiana, located. According to the legend, the story of the Danish prince Hamlet by Shakespeare, should have taken place at the Kronborg castle in Helsingoer. Gilleleje further north is a charming little fishing village. Fredensborg castle is one of the Danish Royal Family’s palaces, where they often stay during spring and autumn. It is often the site of important state visits and events in the Royal Family. Frederiksborg Castle today is no longer a Royal residential palace – it is The National History Museum.
Roskilde
Roskilde is located only 30 km from Copenhagen, at the Roskilde fjord. In this fjord, some old wooden Viking ships have been found, today displayed in the Viking Ships Museum. One of Denmark’s most impressive churches is the Roskilde Cathedral, also registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Odense – the birthplace of H.C. Andersen
Heading south west from Copenhagen, crossing the impressive Great Belt bridge, you reach the island Fyn. In the town Odense, the world famous fairy tale writer H.C. Andersen was born. Pay a visit to the H.C. Andersen Museum.
